Peter Reid
He was committed. Peter was willing to make triathlon the most important thing in his life, it was his life. Peter was willing to do what it would take to improve and be the best. He talked about joining a swim team when he was first starting out since he wasn't a great swimmer. The coach was willing to accept him on the team but pointed down to the end of the pool and said you'll have to swim in that lane. That lane had 10-12 year old boys swimming in the lane, he was in his early 20's. He said the toughest part was he would have to swim in meets with the kids and he said they beat him. The next season though he was coming out of the water with the leaders. He was committed and willing to put up with some humility to improve.
He was consistent and methodical. One of the big things that I took away from listening to Peter was that he would do the little things to improve. The two big examples of this were his focus on run drills. He said he would do the drills weekly (consistent) and would focus on executing them flawlessly. Peter contributed this to him going from a guy that could only run around a 42 minute 10K in the Olympic distant triathlons to being a 2:42 marathon guy in the Ironman. The other story that stuck out in my mind was his focus on diet leading up to a race. He knew he had to eat healthy for the weeks leading up to key races and he said he would put that as a priority leading to the race cutting out the "bad" foods and things like coffee.
What I took away from my time with Peter aside from some great tips on training and racing was that you need to find your own path in triathlon (why your doing it) and to focus on the little things in your preparation and racing.
With all of his success in the sport of triathlon and his great physical abilities, in the end he is just a man on a journey to find happiness and fulfillment in life. I get the sense that he's well on continuing that journey.
Peter when you're ready to hit the water for some sailing give me a shout and I'll be happy to get you nailing your jibes.

Tucson Camp - Day 5
The climb totaled 24 miles and we ascended 6300 feet over that distance. and according to my Garmin we topped out over 8000 feet of altitude. This is really a spectacular ride the roads are beautifully smooth, little traffic and spectacular views. The climb takes you from the desert and cactuses to an alpine forest we even had some snow on the edges of the road. Really great and I understand why it's considered one of the great rides anywhere.
We took a short break in Summerhaven and grabbed a slice of pie at the pie shop. I'm not a huge pie fan but it tasted pretty damn good after 2:50 of climbing.
I was itching to get back on the road as I was getting a little chilled so I headed out (can't get lost just follow the road back down the way we came up). You climb for about 15 minutes before really hitting the actual descent. Just as I was coming back to the true summit a rider was coming up the other direction (this guy was flying up the hill). We ended up heading down together which was wild. We were flying. This is the greatest descent you can literally fly down the entire way without hitting the breaks. This doesn't mean that it's easy. I was on the pedals the entire way looking for more speed and my average heart rate on the descent was just a tick below my average for the climb up. The descent which took me 2:50 to ride up took me just 50 minutes to descend.
There is one section where the road is cobbled sandstone but very rough and as I exited this section I noticed that my garmin was gone. Now I lost my first garmin just a couple weeks ago on a ride so I wasn't going to replace this one just a week after buying it so I turned the bike around and rode back up to the cobble section to look for it. Thankfully I found it.
I hit the bottom of the ride and pulled off to the side of the road to wait for a few other riders for the 10 mile spin back to the hotel. I ended up waiting 25 minutes for the next riders to arrive which included Peter Reid and Garth from Specialized who had raced down from Summerhaven. We did a casual spin (at 22 mph) back to the hotel through Tucson and headed out for a quick transition run.
This was the end of sessions for the week and we capped off the trip with a chat with Peter Reid and and a BBQ with all of the camp attendees and coaches. Overall a great week and I'm feeling energized and ready to keep the training going. I'm going to be posting a few other posts about the trip including my impressions and chats with Sam Mcglone and Peter Reid.

Tucson Camp - Day 4
Immediately after the bike we headed out for a 20 minute transition run and I felt really good at the end of the run. Later that afternoon we headed out for some run drill training. Overall I felt like it was a pretty easy day. I think they were resting us up for the big day on the Mt. Lemon ride.

Tucson Camp - Day 3
I led the group up the trail today and felt amazing today. Comfortable and very consist. Within a mile or so things separated a bit and we had a group of 4 with Sam McGlone, Harrison (young kid from Vancouver, BC) and Paul Cross. Towards the top Paul stopped at trail Y to give directions and when I looked back it was just myself and Sam. After cresting the top of the trail we headed back down on the road which goes up the canyon bottom. It was a fun, fast, comfortable descent back to the parking lot. The run was a little over 1:20 and about 9 miles. It was really fun getting to chat with Sam during the run and pick her brain on her run training.
We had a great afternoon session in the pool. It was great swimming in an outdoor swimming pool which I've never done. It was a relatively easy workout focusing on drills and a few laps which totaled probably 1700 yards. It was great to stretch things out after the morning run.
We capped off the day with great chat with Sam McGlone about tips for racing in Kona and then headed out for a group dinner which was really fun to chat with Paul Cross and Ian from Specialized at dinner. Off to bed now as tomorrow is the log ride to the border (or nearly to the border).
Tucson Camp - Day 2
After a short regroup we headed down the backside of gates pass which is a short steep technical descent before flattening with some rollers. My group headed continued on for a loop of about 10 miles. Everyone else was on tri bikes and things got rolling in the paceline which was smokin fast. The group was rolling along at about 30 miles an hour. I was at the back of of the group trying to hang on but it didn't last long. I was feeling the effects of my sinus infection still. I ended up a couple minutes back at the end but still holding 25-27 mph on my own.
The group I was in were no slouches. It included Sam McGlone (2nd at Kona this year) and TJ Tollakson who was 3rd at Ironman Louisville in 8:46 and 30th in Kona in 9:03 with a 4:44 bike split at the front. Sam was leading this group and this little woman can fly, really impressive.
We then needed to go back up to the top of the pass which wasn't long but it was steep most of the climb was over 20% grade with the last section topping out at 26%. We finished off the ride back down to Tucson and through the city streets including cutting through the University of Arizona.
After a little downtime and refueling we headed out for a short 45 minute run as we're going long the following day. It was a great little run and I had the opportunity to run and chat with Peter Reid which was really cool. I'll post separately about our chat later.

Hello Tucson
We got things going today with a three hour ride. I got a flat after about 10 miles, so I drafted behind the SAG van (at about 28 miles an hour) for a couple miles before I called it and got in the van and we spent the next 15 minutes trying to find the group. The tough part of the ride was a climb 5 miles up Mt. Lemon (the entire ride is about 26 miles). I ended up being the fastest in the group up which surprised me but it was a good ride up and I kept a steady cadence and didn't bonk on the climb which was great.
The descent down is amazing. There are no turns you need to slow down for so you can literally pedal hard the entire descent. I went off the front and was having a blast until I needed to slow for a car ahead of me. I debated making the pass several times but decided it probably wasn't the best idea. In the end Peter Reid caught me right before the bottom of the climb where we were going to regroup. This was the quote of the day for me from Peter, "I had to go like hell to catch you". Anytime a rider like Peter says something like that it makes you feel pretty good.
Now my luck with tubes just continued as I got a second flat. Ian the rep from Specialized and Jay Prasuhn an editor with Triathlete Magazine were kind enough to stop and help me. We took a slight different route home than the rest of the group since none of us were sure of the route. This included some cyclocross action on the road and triathlon bikes including a creek crossing. We must have looked pretty funny but we managed finally to find our way back to the hotel.
After a quick shower and a re-fuel we had a quick seminar with Paul Cross on Nutrition which was interesting. Then we were off for our afternoon run. We ended up doing a 50 minute trail run in what I believe was the Saguaro National Park. It was really great to get to run in a different environment. Bottom line is running uphill is running uphill.... :)
We ended the day with a chat with Cliff English who is the US National Triathlon coach about day in and day out training.
I'm off to bed as tomorrow is another long day of biking and running.

The flu bug hits home
The previous weekend I had been up at Steven's Pass for an annual trip with High School friends. We were all crammed together in a lodge with many little kids and babies. I was really careful about keeping hands washed but alas I didn't survive and picked up a little bug (probably from picking up a little bugger).
Started feeling a little rough on Friday with a scratchy throat and Saturday morning I got up and dressed for my planned 2 hour run but then thought I'd be better off taking the day off and not risking really getting sick and having to be down for a week. Luckily things never really got fully involved and I was back training yesterday with a good 4000 yd swim workout. Now I just have some congestion in my head and chest but I seem to have plenty of energy so I'm going hopefully get back on track this week.
It was tough not working out this weekend both because those are my long run and ride days and because it was beautiful, warm (well....above 50 degrees) and sunny. It was killing me to be inside and laying low.
I'm headed off to Tucson in just 10 days for training camp and very much looking forward to the warmer temps, training partners and coaching.
On other fronts I've decided to upgrade my bike for this coming season (you know that old I need versus I want question). I wanted to upgrade my bike. I've ordered a Cervelo P3 frameset and will switch all my components over to the new frame when it arrives in April. Apparently this still remains a very hot bike for 2008.
I was looking at the Specialized S-Works Transition but the earliest availability for that locally was going to be in May which would be too late to get any quality time in the saddle before Hawaii 70.3. I will get a chance to ride the Specialized in Tucson as I understand the Specialized reps will be there as they still sponsor Peter Reid. If I ride it and I love it I might need to see if I can work a deal but then again I know that I'm happy with Cervelo as I've been riding my Cervelo Soloist Carbon for the past 8 months and really love it.

Lots of news and a big training month
I'm going to be competing for Team Zoot GU. Zoot is a major triathlon apparel company and GU makes the gooey stuff that keeps you moving during training and racing.
My coach Shawn Skene who does web development for several triathletes websites also does race day coverage on the web for Ironman.com at some events. He's confirmed that he'll be doing the coverage for Ironman Coeur d'Alene and that I should expect to get coverage on race day (win, lose or melt down), no pressure right. I'm also stoked that he'll be at the race.
I just finished off a great week of training. It was a lower volume week this week, but that is all relative however. It was a little over 9 hours of training this week. My leg has been feeling much better, it's still a little stiff after my hard run days but in general I'm remembering how it feels to train without pain and it's nice.
I'm already starting to understand how this year is going to differ (or already differs from last year) and all I need to do is look at the numbers. Here's the breakdown. This past month I completed 38 workouts totaling 40 hours. In comparison the same month last year I did 25 workouts totaling 26 hours. Actually I did more workouts and hours of training last month than I did in any month leading up the the Ironman last year. Did I mention it's only the beginning of February!!!
In particular I logged 311 miles on the bike and/or trainer which is less than last year but unlike last year my long rides have been outdoors which are so much tougher (not too mention colder and wet, especially this winter). I ran 117 miles last month compared to 86 miles last year and I'm running faster and doing much more focused running than last year. The big one is the swim last year 2.9 miles of swimming, this year 16.4 miles. I don't even want to know the difference in speed, but for reference today I did a short swim workout with 2 x 800 yds. With a moderate effort I was swimming a pace that would put me in around one hour for the swim (last year 1:15), and yes we still have 4 1/2 months till the big race, I'm so excited about the potential in the water.
I'm putting my final plans on fund raising for Charley's Fund for this year, looking forward to a few more cold and wet weeks of training before my trip to Tucson for training camp.

5 months till Coeur d'Alene
I've managed to get outside for a few rides between the snow, rain and wind and it's been great but the roads are covered with debris. You don't realize what kind of havoc that causes until you ride in it a bit. I've had several flats all attributed to debris. It's so nice in the spring and summer that the street sweepers are out and keep the bike lanes and shoulders clear of glass and other debris that will puncture a tire. I was starting to get a little worried about the amount of riding in particular long rides with my week long camp coming up in early March and whether or not I'd be up to the high volume and length of the rides. After thinking about it I guess I shouldn't worry about it. If I suffer during the camp that's all part of getting ready for the big race in Coeur d'Alene, the camp isn't the focus after all.
My swimming is really where I'm noticing lots of improvement (not surprising since there wasn't really anywhere to go but up from where I was). My coach added a third swim workout this week very short and sweet, warm up 300, 1000 yd tempo and 200 cool down. Most of my workouts are 3400-4000 yards. He wanted me at around 1:30 pace per 100 yards during the 1000. I finished the 1000 in 14:40 or right at 1:28/100yd and my splits were really consistent. The best part of all is that I felt like I could have easily kept swimming at that pace. Given that I've got 5 months till IMCDA I'm feeling really good about my opportunity to go sub 1 hour in the swim. Time to start thinking about swim race strategy - never thought I'd hear myself say that!!!!!
I've been averaging between 8.5 and 10.5 hours of training a week recently and next week my coach is cutting my training back significantly for a little more rest and recovery. Then I'll start of my 4 week rotations with build ups. The other thing we agreed on was that I'll definitely be training through IM 70.3 Hawaii, no big taper the week leading up to the race while I'm over in Kona. I'll be training every day getting a taste for the heat and humidity.

Reflections on 2007
- I improved a lot this year. This was my second year of competing triathlons and I made huge improvements. I remember laughing at myself in August of 2006 in my first sprint triathlon at my transitions, pathetic swim, suffering ride and slow run. Last year I did my first half finishing in 5:35. This year I finished a half in 4:57, a 38 minutes improvement and finished my first full Ironman in a respectable 10:45.
- The swim in an Ironman is crowded, violent and maybe just a little scary. The Ironman Coeur d'Alene swim was rough this year which just added to how physical the swim was. It may have been the toughest swim in an Ironman in 2007 so it's all flatter water and faster swims from here on out.
- Last year was a big year for training. 104 miles of swimming. 4,400 miles of biking and 1,050 miles of running in 324 workouts. I can't wait to see what next year brings.
- The cause of the pain is not always what it appears. I spent lots of time with my physical therapist this year and the one thing I've learned this year is that just because the pain is in one spot the cause of that pain may be originating somewhere else.
- I need to swim more. While I always thought that I could get by on my biking and running in the endurance triathlon races but this year I learned that having a good swim may make the difference between meeting my goals in the Ironman or not.
2008 is getting off to a good start as my sore leg is feeling better, I finished the year with a big volume block of training and am excited about the prospects for the upcoming year. Happy New Year!!!
